Terra Nova Demonstration Shots

Finally I'm getting the Terra Nova Gallery demo posted.  Excuse the delay.  My son had ACL surgery, then a family funeral...etc...

Special thanks to David Hawkinson, Hawkinson Photography and owner Terra Nova Gallery, for such great demo shots!

Here are some shots of the crowd at the show and watching the demo.

Let's get to work:

Explaining my palette:  Titanium White, Permanent Lemon Yellow (Bismuth Vanadium), Cadmium and/or Permanent Orange, Winsor Red, Manganese Blue Thalo, Quinacridone Magenta, Permanent Green Deep, "Burnt Sienna"  (Transparent Oxide Red PR 101), Ultramarine Blue.  I'll also add a Cadmium and/or Permanent Yellow Medium and replace the Winsor Red with Talens-Rembrandt Permanent Red Deep.  I mix and tube my own series of greys.  Medium:  Odorless Mineral Spirits, Liquin Fine Detail & Liquin Impasto (on this piece)...OR ONLY Galkyd Lite and/or Galkyd & Galkyd Gel.  Different feel to each.  The Galkyds can be mixed but I never mix different brands of alkyd mediums, ie., I don't mix the Liquin Fine Detail with the Galkyds.  I've heard they use different formulas, so I play it safe.

A plug for the... SOLTEK EASEL.  I LOVE my Soltek Easel.  My wife and I each own one.  Had them for years.  The ONLY way to go!  Thank you Jim Wilcox!!!

Taping the model for position.  Three hour pose.  Breaks every 20-25 minutes.

Vine charcoal drawing.

Background setting to influence figure.

Painting knife scrape.

Mass and posterize light & shade.  General to specific.

Fun crowd!

Final polish.

V...A...L...U...E!

I'm still waiting on those gallery demo photos.  When I receive 'em, I'll post 'em.

I'll be demonstrating and running the Head Painting Workshop again at Salt Lake Community College for our Concurrent Enrollment Program's High School Workshops this Friday.  He's the same model we had last year for the painting, Rogue, posted previously.  "The Captain" is a terrific model and what a great costume!  The kids really enjoy him.  Fantastic how well these students do in a session from life.

We'll concentrate on value utilizing a palette of only titanium white, burnt sienna and burnt umber.

We'll chant:
"Give me a V...give me an A give me an...L give me a...U give me an...E!  What does it spell?  VALUE!"

We'll pay homage to Mr. Howard Pyle with emphasis on value and the pirate costume.

Howard Pyle, Father of American Illustration and Founder of the Brandywine School, taught the principles, and I paraphrase:

-With every change in plane direction, comes a change in value.

-The darkest light (middle/dark halftones) on the light side of an object cannot be as dark as the lightest light (reflected light) on the dark side.  Conversely, the lightest dark (reflected light) on the dark side of an object, cannot be as light as the darkest light (middle/dark halftones) on the light side.

Demo Tonight

Come on out to Terra Nova Gallery tonight, Fri., Feb. 6th from 6-9pm, and visit with me as I demonstrate from life.  I love these demos.  It's an exciting combination of model, artist and onlooker participation. It's a challenge switching on both sides of my brain simultaneously so I can talk and paint at the same time.  Forgive me if I end up painting a conversation and talking a brushstroke!

See you there!

Approach 2

Here is how I start from life.  In this demo, I draw with the paint.  Sometimes, I draw with pencil or vine charcoal.

Demonstration from life stressing value through monochromatic painting.  Finish:  24x18 oil on panel

I also use a freer vine charcoal approach on some illustrations.  Finish:  16x20 oil on panel.

The loose approach to drawing helps my illustration to become more fluid.

Vice versa, my tighter drawing helps my accuracy and frees my approach from life.
